What are studios looking for? How can I get into a good animation school? What should I be studying?

I get a lot of these types of questions now and again, and I never know how to answer them. I can’t be sure of what studios are looking for, I don’t control admissions policies to schools, and I have little idea what makes for a current and relevant curriculum. There are a lot of variables in your bid for a career in animation, and it’s kind of impossible to control most of them. You must be crazy to want this job!

I find it helpful to focus on the things I can control. Among those things are your study habits and how you spend your personal time. It’s good to work hard and have goals—without them we would get nowhere. Study hard and make decisive strides towards achieving your art goals. But in the heat of that pursuit, don’t forget to go out and live your life!

If you spend any amount of time looking at artists online, you’ve probably figured out by now that there are about a million dudes and dudettes in internetville who draw better than you (I relive this realization daily). Once your have done your best to rise to their level, the only tool you have to compete with these crazy talents is your background, your personal character—is you!

Consider developing your whole self with the same raw focus and intensity that you develop a particular skill set. Get focused. Go out, have adventures. Run, jump, skin your knee, fall in love, root loudly for the away team at a baseball game, barely escape a crash of stampeding rhinos, live to see another day. Experience things big and small. Go for a walk. The world is full of wonders.

I know this advice is not particularly animation-specific, but maybe that’s for the best. At any rate, it is something I feel strongly about. Animation is great, and there are few things that I enjoy doing more than drawing and storytelling. But in order to have stories to tell, first you have to live them.

I dunno about you guys, but as a soon-to-be college graduate with nothing planned ahead, I think this is pretty darn comforting! Anthony Holden is my hero.

This is our family dog, Arnold! As you can probably tell, he is a pit-mix. While he has had a few health issues over the past few years, we have struggled through it with him - from tumors, to hernias, to arthritis, and then some - but today things really went from bad to worse. Arnie is suffering from paralysis of the larynx, and it’s going to require some emergency surgery, the price-tag of which is between $5,000 and $6,000.

We don’t have that kind of money… but I’m willing to work for it. I love this dog. He doesn’t even live with me, but let me reiterate, I love this dog. Our whole family LOVES this dog. He’s on the older side - or, well, WE THINK, due to the fact he was adopted out of a rescue program, we aren’t 100% sure how old he is, although those cataracts of his are tellin’ a tale - but he has a few good years left in him, and I’m not going to give them up without a fight.

We have to make the decision by TOMORROW, May 11th, if we are going to be able to pay for this. Apparently a payment plan is negotiable, but this is still a LOT of money as far as our family funds go. We are riddled with health issues on the human side of things, too, so our usual buffer for pet bills just isn’t gonna cut a few thousand bucks.

I have set up a little crowd-funding thing here, as the elegantly titled Save Arnie-Ru! There are more specifics to read about if you want to click it and check it out. If you show me a screen-cap of your receipt page, you can e-mail it to me, message me, whatever you prefer, I will draw you somethin’. It’s just that easy. Donate a buck? GET A SKETCH. Donate more? I mean, hey, it’s negotiable. I’ll see what I can do! And I will do my best. I will take requests! Let me know when you send me your receipt if you had something in mind and I’ll try to be flexible. I am also putting up a DONATION BUTTON on the front of my blog, which I have never done, before. If you want to send me a note through that saying what you would like, I can e-mail you the picture through whatever is listed on your PayPal.

So let me tell you about the shittiest parent on the motherfucking planet.

I work at a grocery store and this man comes in with his 11 year old son. He buys a pack a cigarettes and a two cases of beer. The son was holding a two dollar drawing pad and placed it on the belt and I guess the dad didn’t notice it at first but when I was about to scan the pad he asked where’d it have come from and turned towards the kid and asked “Did you put that shit up there?”. He told me to put it back and then told his 11 year old child that he “ain’t paying for that gay ass notebook.”. So I looked at the kid, who was close to tears and saying how he ran out of paper at home and my heart broke. So I gave the pad to him, for free, and told the dad I would take care of it. I gave the kid some tokens for a game outside and said I would look forward to buying some of his drawings and paintings when he’s all famous. He kids face was so priceless and I thought everything was good. But then, about 10 ten minutes after giving the kid his notebook, I walked outside and saw this. The drawing pad all ripped up and tossed on the pavement. I could only imagine what happened in the parking lot, but I know that that poor kid heart is fucking ripped apart, just like this pad.

I’m fucking horrified that there are parents like this, who, just because it’s not masculine or gender specificthey won’t let their children follow their true passions or explore interests that lead to their happiness. Even more so, I’m horrified that parents don’t care about the fine arts anymore because it doesn’t have job security. Since when did it ever matter to a child if their passion makes them money or not? Parenting is about supporting whatever makes your child happy. Have some fucking consideration for your child’s wants not your homophobic and anti-art ideals.

I almost cried reading this…

Decided to take advantage of no one being home, so I whipped out my tablet and decided to doodle something. It’s been a while since I just let my hand do it’s own thing without worrying about what it looks like, what style, if it’s correct looking, blah blah.

I don’t have time for that. Now, drawing is a luxury for me. I don’t have time for it like I used to. I keep beating myself up over it especially since I had to put various projects on hold. But that’s the way life goes.

It’s my birthday today. I am 28 now. I don’t have time to worry about where my art is going. I already made the decision that it’s not a path career and that it’s just a hobby. So why am I still holding myself back? I dunno, guess I’ll fight with this feeling for the rest of my life. It’s a head problem. I’m working on it.

It’s my personal mantra that art is fun, no matter how it looks (even if the style or anatomy is horrid). There are just some things you have to get out your system. And if you know me well, you know if I don’t make stories, I go crazy.

These three little ones are from an old story of mine called O-Hazzard. I switched up and put them in another story called Blue Kingdom. Just for funsies. And what. happened. to. my. style?? I’ve been watching a lot of anime lately, haha (especially KyoAni stuff) so I guess it’s on my brain.

I dunno…I kinda like it. I did it without thinking. :)
